2021 was the year of arresting and authentic women on television. Women occupied center stage in science fiction and fantasy.

Elizabeth Olsen tackles grief by channeling decades of classic sitcom television in WandaVision. Popular British female actresses showcase their talent in the Victorian-era steampunk fantasy action drama The Nevers and the expansive fantasy spectacle The Wheel of Time.

We also saw more television shows led by women of color.

Coming-of-age dramas like Skater Girl and Never Have I Ever revolve around young Indian teenage girls. A Latinx actress headlines Disney+’s Diary of a Future President. Netflix’s popular On My Block features multiple female Latinx characters.

Robin Thede’s A Black Lady Sketch Show boasts an all-Black female ensemble cast. African-American women headline network shows in The Equalizer and 9–1–1. We’ve seen critically acclaimed Black female-centric programs like Queen Sugar and Insecure run for multiple seasons.

Yet, while last year saw an uptick in women on screen, progress remains slow.
